‘Twas the night of gift-thieving, and all through the house,
Many creatures were drooling for a Panzer or Maus.
Their boxes were all placed in the tables with care,
In the hopes that the models would soon all be theirs.
The modelers were snug in their ill-fitting chairs,
With smells of polystyrene filling their nares.
And mom in her lighted sweater, and I in my cap,
Had settled down for cookie-induced nap.
But up from the gavel arose such a clatter
It was time to get down to the heart of the matter.
Then a tempting tin cup did magically appear,
And the gift-thieving began with a whimper and cheer!
The patrons sat silent, eagerly enthralled
A slip of paper appeared and a name was then called,
The packages they lay there in bright colors and bows,
Oblong and squarish in their silent repose.
The boxes were shook, and rattled a few,
Oh how they wished for a quick peek-a-boo!
Is it a tank …or is it a boat?
Or will it be a plane with an amphibious float?
In fury they grabbed them and began to chuckle and gloat,
And the games then began as all turned cutthroat.
“Alas!” they cried, “How could you do so!”
“It’s a one-twenty-fourth tank from Bordeaux!”
Their gazes became steely, their eyes transfixed
Their dream diorama others had just nixed!
The boxes they capered and bounced across the room,
“Soon I’ll get even and show you your doom!”
Battleships, stealth fighters, and T-35’s,
Old jalopies, jet aircraft, and bombers that dived!
Across and across they went at a furious pace,
But where were the sci-fi kits or even real space?
At last they were spent, just books on the table,
No more a model kit Tower of Babel
Sadly, they left, disappointments in hand,
“Next time I’ll get that kit as I planned!”
….Mwahhahahaha!
